sets a New World Speed Record

Record in the 100m sprint with a time of 9.74 seconds. Quixtar

Asafa broke his own record at the IAAF
Grand Prix at Rieti, Italy on Sunday during a semi-final run
where he slowed during the last 5 meters. Asafa followed the
semi-final heat with an event winning time of 9.78 making his
performance the greatest double in the history of track and
field. What is more impressive is that Asafa stated he is
capable of running significantly quicker.
Asafa was clearly disappointed with the
Osaka race. “In Osaka, I was too tense,” Powell said. “I thought
too much about my race and the time I was hoping to achieve. On
the other hand I was very relaxed in coming here (Rieti). That
means I could run 9.68.” After setting a new world record, Asafa
has recovered his championship form. “I’ve been working on a few
things with my coach and correcting some things,” said Powell.
“I’d like to say to my fans that Asafa Powell is back.”
Asafa’s next major goal is to win gold at
the 2008 Beijing Olympics. "Next year my only goal is the
Olympics," the Jamaican sprinter said Monday, a day after
improving his time by three-hundredths of a second to 9.74 at
the Rieti Grand Prix. "I plan to race many more times before the
Olympics than I did this year."
